Obituary for Harold Cosgrove

– Harold Cosgrove, age 78, of Oxford, beloved husband of Kate (Courtney) Cosgrove, entered peaceful rest on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at Lord Chamberlain Rehabilitation Center in Stratford. Born in Yonkers, NY on December 14, 1939 of Irish immigrants, Mr. Cosgrove proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps.
He was a graduate of Bridgeport University and retired from General Electric and then Omega Engineering while living in Oxford for over 44 years.
Harold or Hal as many called him was very active with his children and his community. He coached soccer for a number of years; many times shouting his favorite quote “when in doubt kick it out”. Basketball was always his favorite. Being 6’5” it came easily to him as a teen and then wanting to instill the sport in others by coaching the town teams. In addition, he was a Boy Scout leader camping at Goshen and working with the boys to get their badges or helping sell Christmas trees. He progressed to serving on Troop One committee where he received the President’s Award in 1992.
A devout communicant at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Harold taught sixth grade CCD classes on Saturday mornings for over 25 years. In addition, he was a member of the American Legion Post 174 for 20 years; and member and treasurer of the Oxford Garden Club.
Harold was active in town government as a member of the Planning & Zoning Commission for many years serving on the present committee until his death. He was forthright and always stood up for what he believed in or to help an individual.
In addition to his wife Kate, of 51 years, survivors include his loving children, Clare DeLibro and her husband Bobby of Easton, Christopher Cosgrove and his wife Sarah Crawford of London, England, Courtney Cosgrove and his wife Ariel of Hamden, and sister, Irene Fitzgerald of VA, including four treasured grandchildren, Finn, Torin, Aiden and Adeline; as well as much-loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 10:00 am DIRECTLY in the Church of the Good Shepherd, 135 Mountain Rd. Seymour. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Southford Cemetery, Oxford. Relatives and friends may call on Monday, from 4 pm to 8 pm in the Ralph E.
