Obituary for Edith McKane (Rollinson)
Edith (Rollinson) McKane, of Oxford, CT, entered into peaceful rest on December 1, one week shy of her 97th birthday. She leaves behind her beloved husband of seventy-one years, Charlie, devoted children David (Linda) McKane of Oxford, and Margaret McKane (David Bates) of Framingham, MA. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren Kellie (Anthony), Katie, Sarah, Angela (Brian) McKirryher, Michael (Lorraine) Ames, and many nieces, nephews, and great grand-children. In addition, she leaves behind a brother, Robert “Archie” (Dorothy deceased) and Florence (Clarence deceased).
Edith was predeceased by her mother Myra Rollinson, father William Rollinson, siblings, Arthur (Mary) Rollinson, William (Tillie) Rollinson, Herbert (Muriel) Rollinson, Myra Allen, Margaret (Geroge) Arms, Evelyn (Jim) Wilson and beloved sons, Peter and Paul McKane.
Edith was born in Shelton where she grew up the eighth of nine children. After high school she did art work in a local industry. She met Charlie in the summer of 1942 and they were engaged the following year. Marriage was delayed until Charlie returned from service in WWII and built their home in Oxford. There they spent more than seventy years together surrounded by the nature they both loved. Over the years, Edith enjoyed raising her family, gardening and bird watching. Her children fondly recall being summoned home for lunch by their mother ringing an old cowbell that had been found on the property. In later years, nothing compared to the joy she felt being a full time caregiver to her loving grandchildren.
Edith will be remembered by her family and friends for her commitment to helping both her family and those in need. She grew up in modest circumstances and had great compassion for those less fortunate. Due to her tenacity and devotion, people who knew her best affectionately referred to her as “The Big E,” a nickname coined by her son, Paul. She was active in the Great Hill United Methodist Church community. Renowned for baking Christmas cookies and chocolates, Edith often prepared the weekly coffee hour at church. She also donated her time and talent cooking meals for the Spooner House.
Edith spent her final weeks living at Brookdale Senior Living Center. Though her time in their care was short, Edith’s family would like to extend much gratitude to the staff for their exceptional care.
A memorial service will be held in Edith’s honor Saturday, December 8th at 12 noon at Great Hill United Methodist Church in Seymour CT. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Great Hill UMC with a notation for the McKane Family Scholarship or to Oxford Special Olympics. Arrangements are entrusted to the Ralph E.
